Mine, yours, and mal-
Build possessives with -a, and flip meaning with mal-.
Add -a to a pronoun: mi → mia, vi → via, ŝi → ŝia, ni → nia, ili → ilia. They behave as adjectives: mia libro, miaj libroj, mian libron. Mal- turns a word into its opposite: juna / maljuna, fermi / malfermi, amiko / malamiko. That one prefix halves the list you must memorise.

- Kial la fenestro estas malfermita? Why is the window open?
- Ĉar la ĉambro estas malvarma? Ne — ĝi estas varma, tial ni malfermas. Because the room is cold? No — it is warm, so we open (it).
Homo is not viro
Homo means a human being. Viro is a man, virino a woman. There is no *homino.
